Annual Appeal: $10,000 Match Opportunity!

Dear Beloved Community Partners,

For nearly 70 years, Better Health of Cumberland County has stood beside our neighbors in their most vulnerable moments, ensuring that access to care, medication, and hope is never out of reach. Every day, individuals and families in our community face health challenges that can feel overwhelming, especially when resources are limited or uncertain. But together, we have the power to change that story.

This year, we invite you to be part of something deeply personal and profoundly impactful.

One of our dedicated Board members Susan Miller shares her family’s journey:

“Twenty years ago, our six-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and our world changed overnight. Suddenly, we were parents learning to check blood sugar at all hours, count carbohydrates, administer insulin, and navigate the uncertainty of a life-altering diagnosis. We were fortunate to have access to excellent medical care, but many individuals living with diabetes, whether they have Type 1 or Type 2, are not.

Our daughter’s diagnosis has never defined or limited her. With careful management, determination, and strong support, she has achieved extraordinary milestones, earning her master’s degree, playing high school lacrosse, camping at the base of the Grand Canyon, hiking the Appalachian Trail, kayaking the Chesapeake Bay, and embracing adventures we once feared might not be possible. Her journey is proof that with the right care and guidance, people living with diabetes can do more than survive, they can truly thrive.

This year marks another milestone: she turns 26 and is now navigating the responsibility of purchasing health insurance on her own for the first time. For a young adult living with Type 1 diabetes, access to comprehensive and affordable coverage is not optional, it is essential. Insulin, supplies, regular endocrinology visits, and emergency preparedness come at a significant cost. While she is prepared and capable, this transition has reminded us how vulnerable many individuals can feel when access to coverage is uncertain or unaffordable.

For more than 20 years, I have volunteered with Better Health and witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact this organization makes. For nearly 70 years, Better Health has bridged critical gaps in health care, connecting individuals to essential services, expanding access to emergency medications and medical equipment, and providing education and support for those living with diabetes and other chronic conditions.

Today, we are proud to commit $10,000 in a dollar-for-dollar matching gift. Every donation will be doubled, directly helping individuals gain the care, resources, and encouragement they need to live healthy, full lives. Together, we can ensure that no one in Cumberland County faces health care challenges alone, and that every person has the opportunity not just to manage their condition, but to thrive.”

As Executive Director, I have the privilege of seeing stories like this unfold every day, stories of resilience, courage, and the transformative power of access to care. But I also see the growing need in our community. Too many individuals are still forced to choose between their health and other basic necessities.

Your support today can change that. Because of this generous matching gift, every dollar you give will go twice as far, providing medications, supplies, education, and hope to those who need it most. Your gift is more than a donation; it is a lifeline.

Please join us in ensuring that every person in Cumberland County has the opportunity to live a healthy, full life.
